The National Evaluation for eighth grade students is the method of external summative assessment of the competencies acquired during middle school education.

The exam is held annually in a single session. Both candidates from public education and those from private education have the right to take NE without a fee.

The average grade obtained in NE VIII is a decisive criterion for admission to high school education.

National coordination of the planning, organization, and conduct of NE VIII, as well as the valorization of their results, is ensured by the Ministry of Education through the National Center for Assessment and Examination (NCAE).

The development of specific assessment procedures is carried out by NCAE, following consultation with specialist departments in the ministry.

County-level/Bucharest municipality coordination of the organization of NE VIII, as well as the valorization of their results, is ensured by the school inspectorate.
